Mission: Possible — What others call impossible, we call Tuesday. These are the missions we’re in the middle of — high stakes, high speed, and happening now.
From tusker relocations, moving entire rhino herds, to snare removals, and undercover sting operations, our success stories show what’s possible when action meets urgency.
Whether you’re a vet, a conservationist, or someone who backs bold action, there’s a role for you.
What We Do
The Wildlife Emergency Fund has a long history of working with the Mpumalanga Provincial Government. We have provided ongoing support to the provincial management authority with helicopter time, veterinary capacity, and equipment in support of efforts to secure wildlife at risk. This support has enabled us to aid in the rescue of countless animals in the province. The WEF aims to sustain this support on an ongoing basis and make a meaningful contribution to the province’s success. We would then further like to extend this support to other provinces in South Africa.
The nature reserves in Zululand, South Africa, are grossly under-resourced and lack capacity. This has led to many problems in the region, especially with human-wildlife conflict and the lack of management of endangered and threatened species. Our interventions include emergency translocations, dehorning, helicopter support, and ongoing management support in protected areas. Without NGO and private sector involvement, Wildlife will remain at risk in this area. Zululand has some of the highest densities of endangered species, and we need to provide support wherever we can.
WEF have been active in the Greater Kruger National Park for over five years, and we have provided critical support to reserves in the area. This support has included everything from pangolin rescues to the rescue and translocations of large elephant herds. There is a significant need to continue providing these services, especially in areas like Letaba Ranch. Snaring is a brutal reality in the area, and we are constantly responding to animals that have been snared in the area and also animals that have been shot by poachers but survived, including rhinos.
We specialise in implementing highly complex rescue missions and other interventions to secure the lives of animals at risk. With decades of experience, the team is able to provide tangible solutions within 24 hours of being notified of the issue. WEF is also at the forefront of elephant translocations in the country and is able to move large groups of elephants at short notice. No project is too big or too small for us to take on.
We are actively pursuing the proclamation of new protected areas in Southern Africa. Without safe space, which is declared as protected areas in perpetuity, the future of individual species remains at risk. Many areas are home to critically endangered species, and it is therefore a matter of urgency that these areas be protected for the long term and that new protected areas are established.
WEF provides technical expertise to protected areas regarding wildlife interventions and problem animal management. These experts are provided at no cost to reserves, and we believe in collaborating with other NGO’s and reserves to make a tangible difference to protected areas and the management of species. These services include assisting in the management of problematic relationships between different landowners, authorities, or communities. We act as the neutral party that some reserves need to implement meaningful conservation strategies.
